Great Rooms . January 2010

No decor anymore!

New surfaces and structures are on the rise in architecture and product design: Geometric guiding lines transposed to surfaces, structures and forms are replacing the trend for flowery ornaments. Structure and design formats are a result of the manufacturing technique – the function is being made obvious from the outside.

A case in point is the “Wooden Carpet” by design newcomer Elisa Strozyk: a hybrid form made of soft textiles and wooden elements. Attaching the wood veneer in a star shape allows folding lines in all directions, which is a condition for creating the different structures of the material. The texture thus turns into a creative and at the same time functional element. The resulting aesthetic effect has its source in the object itself.

This change can be observed not only in interior decoration. We also see it in the aesthetics of the architecture of Jürgen H. Mayer in “Twins”.

But also furniture and accessories reflect this direction, e.g. the “Flamenco” lamp by Johanna Körberg. Exmplary as well: The chair series “salsa” designed by Wolfgang C. R. Mezger and the fruit bowl “La Stanza dello Scirocco” by designer Mario Trimarchi.
