Strasbourg Inside:

For Connoisseurs and Bon Vivants

Strasbourg is also called “the Capital of Europe”. But even beyond its infrastructural and economic importance, this beautiful city in Alsace has many things to offer. For interested visitors, we’ve collected a few special tips – selected by the Brunner family.

  • For gourmets: the cheese boutique “Au Vieux Gourmet”.

A good address for gourmets is for example the Rue des Orfèvres. Here, “Au Vieux Gourmet” awaits you, a small cheese boutique with an unusual and large selection. In the same street, there’s also one of the five branch stores of Frick-Lutz delicatessen. For nearly 200 years, this traditional company has been offering exquisite pies, ham, and more. And there’s also a lot to discover for the lovers of fine desserts: take a look around “Maison Naegel” – this patisserie located right in the heart of the historic city has been offering homemade sweets since 1927. Their fine chocolates, ice cream creations and the exquisite pastries are nearly too beautiful to be eaten.

On the banks of the river Ill, the “Winstub” (wine bar) “Le Pont Corbeau” invites you to take a rest – offering traditional cuisine. Here, your can sit on rustic furniture and enjoy the very comfortable and sociable atmosphere. For all those who like it more modern: the restaurant “Umami” near the cathedral welcomes you with contemporary chic and exquisite several-course menu. Nice and stylish and at the same time comfy: that’s “Code Bar”, located only a few steps further. The extraordinary cocktail creations there are really worth a try. And again close by, the “Cour du Corbeau” promises spending the night in a very special way: right in the center of Strasbourg, only a few steps away from the cathedral, this four-star hotel invites you to a time travel into the past. The rooms of this Alsatian hostel have been carefully renovated and refurbished in style. From there, you can enjoy the view of the beautiful courtyard and its lovely detailed sculptures dating back to the 16th century.

In the mood for art? In the “Villa Greiner”, a permanent exhibition with changing items presents original drawings by the graphic artist and illustrator Tomi Ungerer, who was born in Strasbourg in 1931. Illustrations for children’s books, caricatures and advertising drawings as well as erotic images are on display. Moreover, the collection contains visual art by Ungerer as well as representative collections of graphic artists and illustrators of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Another must for interested visitors is the museum for modern and contemporary art. Located in the historic part of the city center, right at the bank of the river Ill, the concept of the architect Adrien Fainsilber is focused on clear structure and openness – principles that have also been realized in the free access to the different areas and departments of the museum: permanent collections, changing exhibitions, graphical and photographical collection as well as a pedagogic department, library, auditorium, restaurant and bookstore.
